HUMANS LIVE IN THE NEST BECAUSE OF 700 YEARS OLD HISTORY

Kandovan also known as Kanwan is an ancient village in Sahand Rural District in the Central District of Osku County, East Azerbaijan Province, North-Western Iran. It is situated at the foot of the Sahand Mountains near the city of Osku. At the 2006 census, the population of the village was 601 in 168 households. These villages are examples of man-made rock houses that are still inhabited. Troglodite houses excavated inside volcanic rocks are locally called karans, similar to dwellings in the Turkish region of Cappadocia. The karan was cut into non-welded ignimbrates, also known as the "ash-flow tuffs" of Mount Sahand. The conical form of the houses is the result of erosion of ignimbrite layers consisting of porous, round and angular pumice stone along with other volcanic particles that were located in a gray, acidic matrix. During the eruption of the Sahand, pyroclastic flows formed the rocks of Kandovan. The thickness of this structure around the village is over 100 meters (330 ft) and, over time, water erosion has formed cone-shaped rocks.
